One of the Lithuanian players, Raimundis
Vaitkevicius, is so dedicated to the sport he flew early
Saturday morning to Bratislava from Kaunus and took a 200km
taxi ride to Budapest arriving just in time for the Lithuanian-Canadian
game.
That is not mentioning that the tournament
also saw players journey in from Canada, UK, Poland, Russia,
Lithuania (24 hour bus ride), Serbia & Montenegro (5
hours by car) for a mere 180 minutes of hockey. Hats off
to all of them including our Hungarian friends and their
hard work, this is what hockey and life is all about. Thank
you my friends.

March 24 - 28, 2005
Project: Random Photography
Where: Lisbon, Portugal
The intended project experienced a few
obstacles at the last moment and in fact, wasn't carried
out in the end. From Thursday to Monday Radkin took a stroll
through narrow streets, ate delicious fish and was almost
pulled in by an unexpectedly hungry Atlantic wave while
photographing an old piece of lumber protruding from the
beach.
Consequently, the 20 degree weather turned
out just right for some great moments, great shots and a
bit of a break. Images soon to be posted for viewing. Keep
an eye out!
March 9 - 20, 2005
Project: Portrait of a Hockey Player
Where: From Budapest to the Baltic Sea to Belgrade
Hockey because of hockey.
"Why do you play?"
we ask.
Over a period of 11 days Radkin (London,
Ontario native) and Josey Walker (USA, owner of Budapest
Weekends) will be photographing and interviewing local
hockey players of different ages and levels in 8 Central
European countries. We want to know what drives the young
and old to continue picking up their sticks, slap shooting
pucks and risking dental work.
As a Canadian, I have my own reason - I
grew up on it. In the late 70's, 5 years old and losing
pucks in snowbanks aggravated me to no end, but the thought
of spending endless hours with my father watering, shoveling,
bleeding, freezing, sweating, laughing, and losing those
darned pucks... what can I say, even now it brings a tear
to my eye. I myself am not a great player, but I love playing
and I can't wait to discover how our fellow Central European
hockey players feel about the sport.
The trip begins on Wednesday, March 9 in
Budapest, heads north stopping in Slovakia, Czech Republic,
Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for a local hockey
game on Saturday evening. We will dart back to Hungary,
then continue on to Belgrade, Serbia for a hockey tournament
of our own commencing Friday, March 18. A group of Canadian
hockey players living all over Europe and even flying in
from Canada will join forces with the Canadian Ambassador
in Belgrade himself to play in a friendly 5-team tournament
organised by a local team.
No slap shots, no body contact, just a
bunch of guys knocking the puck around for the sake of knocking
the puck around... what other reason do we need?
Radkin and Josey will be submitting daily
reports including pictures and their crazy adventures to
the Radkin "Portrait of a hockey player" blog
site, so stay tuned and share with us your comments!!

Exhibition: Romanian Roma
Where: Roma Cultural Center, Stockholm, Sweden This
exhibition illustrates both ends of the living standard
spectrum for Romanian Roma. Diane Popa (teacher and artist)
from the Roma community in Timisoara (western Romania) accompanied
Radkin to the exhibition opening to tell real stories about
real people and their trials and tribulations in life. More
information to come...
This exhibition will appear at many locations
throughout Scandinavia over the next near.
View images.
Radkin travelled to Timisoara to meet Diane Popa in October
who introduced us to several Roma communities in the surrounding
area. Our goal was to meet and photograph Roma in different
social positions within their own communities and in non-Roma
communities.
September 10 - 13, 2004
Event: Suits on Bikes Charity Cycle
Where: Transylvania, Romania
A charity cycle through the picturesque
landscape of Transylvania. When invited, Radkin gladly joined
the group to photograph the event.
The first Suits on Bikes event took five
riders - the vicar, the entrepeneur, the diplomat and senior
managers from leading companies in Budapest a combined total
of 1,750 kilometres. They visited the centres they are helping
to support. The 350 kilometre ride went through some of
the most stunning countryside in Europe but also some of
its poorest rural communities.

January, 2004
Albania
Journalist Neil
Barnett (The Economist) and Radkin travelled from Tirana
to Vlora in an attempt to find out more about one of the
world's busiest illegal-immigration routes. Read
the article. Images and crazy stories to come...
December 2 - 17, 2003
Exhibition: Things I see, things you see, things
we all see
Where: Budapest, Hungary
An exhibition location not typical - in
a flat. Radkin's own flat. This exhibition was held to introduce
the two end of 2003 series 'Contemplation'
and 'Dreamscapes'
Collections. Thanks to many of Radkin's close friends' help,
the event was kept warm and cosey. It certainly will not
be the last.
November 11, 2003 - present
Exhibition: Roma - Now and Then
Where: Malmö Museer, Malmö, Sweden
Radkin is exhibiting images of Romanian
and Turkish Roma as part of this larger, very well designed
exhibition on Roma displaying contemporary and historic
parts of life such as tools, clothing, musical instruments,
films, and pictures.
