The Collection
Rain in Portugal.
Slopping through slurpy mud puddles our
jeep jiggled us deeper into an eerie landscape. The mist
curled and licked o'er snaking, moss cloaked, stone walls.
Quirky and crumbling stone crosses poked out through the
damp gauze. Trees confused the sky with the strange-knotted
patterns of branches. The damp air sagging with the pungent
smells of wet, ripe moss, grass, bark. A whispered feral
scent of creatures lurking within this ethereal world. The
western most point of continental Europe, the time trapped
hinterlands of Lisbon, Portugal.
A land that was surely molded more for
the furry feet of Bilbo Baggins than my clumsy urban hooves.
One foot out of the vehicle, and I duly slip face first
into the thick, slops of cold mud. A generous embrace, swallowing
up my city garb. Muddy shoes, muddy hair, muddy me, the
hobbitesque landscape had my attention. Gorgeous soaked
greens gurgling in the rain. The gray sky bloated, falling
to the earth. Raw almighty nature everywhere, swallowing
me.
